The most successful hair salons with the most loyal clients are those that go the extra mile for their guests, never forgetting the personal touches that can make a salon visit really special. It’s all about attention to detail, as well as listening to and getting to know your client’s likes and dislikes. Put simply, you need to make your client feel special.
To achieve this, follow these top tips:
1. Make comfort a priority when buying salon chairs, facial beauty tables, backwash units and other pieces of salon furniture. A comfortable client is one that starts to relax more quickly and has a better overall experience.
2. Offer refreshments, even if it’s only a glass of water or a coffee. You could even set up a hot drink station in your salon, offering season-appropriate teas, coffees and other beverages.
3. Get the ambience right, using lighting, music and colour to achieve just the right mood
4. Listen to your client and give them your full attention
5. Try offering other extras, such as the latest magazines or mp3 players during colour treatments, or giving away complimentary products at the end of a visit

The well-established Shimmers Hair Salon in the Merseyside town of St Helens is an inspiring example of how the perfect colour palette can be used to create an uplifting, fresh vibe within a salon space.
Shimmers is vibrant, striking and youthful. The fresh, clean white walls of the space are given a little zing thanks to lime green salon chairs and colourful merchandise displays. The layout and overall ethos is simple and effortless yet chic and fun – it’s a space you want to spend some time in.
The salon has been in existence for more than 25 years, and managed by owner Lynne Webster for 14 of these years. Lynne, who coordinates every detail in her business from the arrangement of salon furniture to the flowers in reception, explained the thinking behind Shimmer’s unique and memorable design to HJi Hairdressers’ Journal. She said:
“My aim was to create a salon that was totally different to any other in the area – quirky, colourful and with a unique design.”
Lynne also talked about the salon’s unique backwash area, which she has called Backwash Heaven and which took around two months to fully design. She said:
“Clients can discuss their product recommendations based on their consultation, and we talk about retail products while they are having their hair washed,”

The Wild Life Hair salon in Sydney, Australia has one hugely exciting feature that few salons can replicate, no matter how elaborate their design scheme may be. The selling point of Wild Life is a breath-taking view of the awe-inspiring Sydney Harbour, which guests can drink in and savour through salon-length panoramic views.
The salon is owned by Phil Cordony, Gary Latham and Jayne Wild, who spent seventeen years in their previous premises before deciding to upgrade to the extraordinary and perfectly placed Point building, which overlooks Bradfield Park and the world-famous Harbour Bridge.
As for the design of the salon, Jayne explains that they wanted to enhance the sense of light and space, whilst also using the style of upmarket Sydney restaurants for inspiration. She explains:
“The theme of our salon is an extension of the surroundings,”
“It’s very light, clean and bright with white or mirrored walls, green accents and timber flooring.”
The salon also uses the plentiful space available in a very innovative way. As well as sharing space with beauty salon Essential Therapy, the salon features roll-away salon furniture and sliding mirrors. This means that the space can be transformed at the drop of a hat and can also be used for presentations, functions, open days and launches.

The growing demand for Garra Rufa fish pedicures has prompted one salon owner in Clevedon, North Somerset, to open a dedicated treatment room for it.
The Beauty Spot, located on Alexandra Road in Clevedon, has opened The Reef Room for visitors wanting the dead or dry skin on their feet nibbled away by garra rufa ‘doctor’ fish.
The new treatment room contains a tank filled with the garra rufa fish, which begin removing dead skin cells and exfoliating the skin as soon as the client’s feet are placed in the water. As well as making feet smoother and softer, the treatment is also believed to be good for the treatment of psoriasis, eczema and poor circulation.
One of the owners of The Beauty Spot, Gill Perry, said of the new room and treatment:
“This treatment has been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years but was only introduced in Britain last year.
“The response from clients so far has been very good.”
The rest of salon boasts stylish décor and salon furniture, and experienced, friendly staff who use only the very best salon equipment to offer a range of beauty services.

Are you planning to open a new hair salon? If so, it is essential that you do your homework and work out ahead of time exactly what you need to make your business a success.
One thing that is for certain is that you can’t achieve success without the right salon furniture and equipment. Use the following checklist to work out what you need to keep your clients happy, make the salon run more smoothly and offer all of the treatments and services you have in mind.
• Reception desk. Every hair salon and beauty spa, regardless of its area of expertise, needs a reception desk. This is the first and last point of contact for clients; without it, there would be chaos.
• Waiting benches. Allocate enough seating for waiting clients to avoid anyone having to stand or the salon becoming too cramped.
• Salon chairs. You can’t cut and style hair without somewhere suitable for clients to sit.
• Styling stations. These consist of a mirror, storage for accessories and optional footrest and shelf.
• Backwash units
• Manicure stations. You can either have individual stations or a nail bar; whichever suits the style of your salon best.
• Pedicure stations
• Massage chairs. Why not treat your clients to a relaxing automated massage whilst they wait or have their hair wash?

Choosing the new furniture for your salon should be a job that you put a lot of thought into. Rather than buying the first pieces of salon furniture you see or the cheapest options, you need to look at features, functions and style to ensure that you get the best value for money.
When it comes to picking out your new manicure stations, you should look out for some or all of the following features, depending on what best suits your salon’s needs.
• Storage. This is essential, whether it’s drawers, shelves, cupboards or a combination of the three. To keep your manicure station neat, clean and organised, everything must have its place.
• Wheels. A portable manicure station can be a big advantage in a busy salon space, although be sure to get one with lockable wheels for extra security.
• Air filter/fan extractor. As manicures often involve chemicals, you need to ensure they are dealt with properly for the clients’ convenience and health.
• Soft arm pads. Along with well-designed salon chairs, these are essential for ensuring the comfort of both client and technician.
• Nail waste systems. These help you to keep your manicure stations neat and hygienic.

With so many pop-up salons and beauty parlours crowding the High Street and shopping centres, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd and attract enough clients to stay afloat. Some salon owners resort to ever-more desperate tactics to get new clients through the door, which can often end up costing them more money than they make.
However, there is one very simple way you can boost your salon clientele. You can hold an open day at your salon, inviting potential clients to come and check out the vibe of your salon. It is a low-pressure way of attracting clients who may normally be nervous about booking an appointment at a new salon.
Preparing for the open day
This is your chance to impress, so make sure that you put all your effort into preparing for your open day. You need to think about:
• Salon furniture. Are your salon chairs too tatty or poorly maintained? Do they need replacing? Scuffed, dirty or faulty salon equipment and furniture can give a very poor impression of your salon.
• Cleaning. Show your salon off to its best by giving the whole place a professional clean.
• Marketing your event. Put posters up, affiliate your salon with local brands and businesses, hand out vouchers and promise discounts (make sure you don’t give away too much though)
• Refreshments
• Complimentary beauty treatments or hair styling

Starting up a new salon or spa from scratch can be an extremely daunting prospect, as there is so much to design and buy. However, you need to get organised and make plans before even thinking about spending money.
It’s a good idea to sit down and plan out exactly what equipment you will need for your salon and how it will all fit in. Follow these tips:
• Draft a menu of treatments and services (i.e. manicures, facials) and work out what salon equipment you will need to be able to offer them. Revise your treatment menu and list of equipment according to your budget. Consider the space you have available in your salon, and how much equipment you can feasibly fit in without overcrowding the space.
• Get the basics right. Ensure that you look for salon equipment that is comfortable, high quality and easy to clean.
• Consider style and extra features. The salon equipment you choose needs to fit in with your salon’s décor, offer extra facilities and features to enhance the clients’ visit, as well as being simple for your staff to use.
• Grab a bargain. Buying items like salon chairs in bulk is often a good way to get a discount, as is comparing prices before buying.
