A salon that is constantly updated and revamped will always be more interesting and enjoyable to visit than one that is resolutely stuck in a rut. Freshening up your salon needn’t be expensive, however; all it takes is a little inspiration and ingenuity.
Take a look outside, as the weather this month has been beautiful. We are now in a new season, with hopefully more good weather on the way. You should be aware that warm, sunny weather has a positive effect on your client’s mood, and your salon should reflect that.
Try these cheap, cheerful tips to get your salon ready for the spring/summer season:
• Clean the windows and let the sunlight in. In fact, clean everything! Make your salon sparkle, as there will be nowhere for dirt and dust to hide once the sunshine comes pouring in.
• Ventilate your salon, even if it’s just opening the window to let some fresh air in
• Offer refreshments to suit the season, such as cool fruity drinks or an exotic summer tea collection
• Add a touch of nature, whether it’s just a vase of fresh flowers on reception or a brand new pot plant in every treatment room

If your hair and beauty business plans to offer beauty treatments, you need to ensure that you have a few things in place at your salon or spa. These include:
• Trained, qualified, experienced and skilled beauty therapists
• High-quality, functional salon equipment in great working order
• Enough space in the salon to give beauty clients a private, relaxing experience
• A competitively priced treatment menu
Even if all of these things are in place, however, there may be one thing still standing in the way of visitors raving about the quality your salon’s beauty services to all of their friends. This crucial factor is comfort, and it applies to everything from the temperature and ambience of the room to the attitude of the therapist and the ergonomic design of the salon chairs.
Comfort needs to be a top priority in every piece of salon furniture you buy, including facial beauty beds, massage chairs and even barber chairs. The client needs to feel physically comfortable, as well as psychologically, or the treatment may end up being a failure regardless of the skill of the therapist or the number of scented candles in the room.

The growing demand for Garra Rufa fish pedicures has prompted one salon owner in Clevedon, North Somerset, to open a dedicated treatment room for it.
The Beauty Spot, located on Alexandra Road in Clevedon, has opened The Reef Room for visitors wanting the dead or dry skin on their feet nibbled away by garra rufa ‘doctor’ fish.
The new treatment room contains a tank filled with the garra rufa fish, which begin removing dead skin cells and exfoliating the skin as soon as the client’s feet are placed in the water. As well as making feet smoother and softer, the treatment is also believed to be good for the treatment of psoriasis, eczema and poor circulation.
One of the owners of The Beauty Spot, Gill Perry, said of the new room and treatment:
“This treatment has been used in the Middle East for hundreds of years but was only introduced in Britain last year.
“The response from clients so far has been very good.”
The rest of salon boasts stylish décor and salon furniture, and experienced, friendly staff who use only the very best salon equipment to offer a range of beauty services.

The reception desk is the first thing your clients will see when they walk into your salon. This means that it is likely to play a big part in the first impression your salon makes on first-time customers.
The ideal reception desk is one that is first and foremost, functional. This is why you need to choose one which has:
• Ample storage space such as shelves and drawers
• Lots of workspace
• Dedicated space for accessories such as computer equipment, chip and pin device etc.
Next, consider the size and shape of the reception desk you plan to get for your salon. Does it fit into the salon well? Does the height of the desk make it easy for guests to approach it? Finally, is there enough room for your reception staff to work comfortably?
Once functionality and other practical elements have been considered, you can now use style and design as a basis for choosing your new reception desk. You need a reception desk that will make a statement about your brand and the salon’s ethos (i.e. ‘elegant and sophisticated’ or ‘edgy and contemporary’), but one that also blends in well with the rest of the salon furniture and décor.

An ambitious and business-minded woman from Newport has set up her own make-up business in a local beauty spa, despite the fact that she was formerly a transport engineer.
Katherine Agong, 34, first realised she needed to learn new skills when the recession hit and her firm threatened redundancies last year. She indulged a long-term interest in make-up and beauty therapy and undertook two beauty and nail technology training courses.
Ms Agong now plans to rent out a room at the Heaven Sent Spa in Newport, offering her services to clients seeking some pampering or a whole new look. Her business will be called Beauty Cupid. Working mainly at weekends, she will be offering nail, eye and make-up treatments that are designed to be long-lasting.
The Heaven Sent Spa itself is relaxation haven, offering a range of luxury treatments in beautiful surroundings. Using skilled beauty therapists and the very latest and most advanced salon equipment, the spa is able to offer everything from massage, manicures and facials to tanning and waxing, and visitors to Heaven Sent will now be able to take advantage of Ms Agong’s make-up services too.

Are you planning to open a new hair salon? If so, it is essential that you do your homework and work out ahead of time exactly what you need to make your business a success.
One thing that is for certain is that you can’t achieve success without the right salon furniture and equipment. Use the following checklist to work out what you need to keep your clients happy, make the salon run more smoothly and offer all of the treatments and services you have in mind.
• Reception desk. Every hair salon and beauty spa, regardless of its area of expertise, needs a reception desk. This is the first and last point of contact for clients; without it, there would be chaos.
• Waiting benches. Allocate enough seating for waiting clients to avoid anyone having to stand or the salon becoming too cramped.
• Salon chairs. You can’t cut and style hair without somewhere suitable for clients to sit.
• Styling stations. These consist of a mirror, storage for accessories and optional footrest and shelf.
• Backwash units
• Manicure stations. You can either have individual stations or a nail bar; whichever suits the style of your salon best.
• Pedicure stations
• Massage chairs. Why not treat your clients to a relaxing automated massage whilst they wait or have their hair wash?

Choosing the new furniture for your salon should be a job that you put a lot of thought into. Rather than buying the first pieces of salon furniture you see or the cheapest options, you need to look at features, functions and style to ensure that you get the best value for money.
When it comes to picking out your new manicure stations, you should look out for some or all of the following features, depending on what best suits your salon’s needs.
• Storage. This is essential, whether it’s drawers, shelves, cupboards or a combination of the three. To keep your manicure station neat, clean and organised, everything must have its place.
• Wheels. A portable manicure station can be a big advantage in a busy salon space, although be sure to get one with lockable wheels for extra security.
• Air filter/fan extractor. As manicures often involve chemicals, you need to ensure they are dealt with properly for the clients’ convenience and health.
• Soft arm pads. Along with well-designed salon chairs, these are essential for ensuring the comfort of both client and technician.
• Nail waste systems. These help you to keep your manicure stations neat and hygienic.

World-class colourist Vasken Demirjian opened his first salon in Westchester, New York, to continue his brother’s legacy after he passed away. However, what he has created is a highly unique conceptual space and a rich source of inspiration for salon owners everywhere.
The aim behind the design of the Vasken Demirjian salon is to enhance the salon experience for the client and to nurture the artistry and creativity of stylists. The walls and floor are crisp, clean and gleaming white, punctured with occasional shots of statement red (in lampshades, whilst other pieces of salon furniture remain flawlessly white), accompanied by glossy surfaces and accented beautifully with ambient, glowing lighting.
Demirjian explained the motivation behind his highly conceptual salon, saying:
“When you are working on hair color, [you need] a clean, sterile environment.
“The surroundings have to be clean and stark so that nothing about the space interferes with the accuracy of the hair color design.”
The colour and styling sections of the salon are clearly defined, yet they work harmoniously with one another in a well-planned layout which also includes a colour bar, coffee bar and shampoo bar. These elements work to make the salon a more social space, the warm ambience created by the salon’s décor echoed in the buzz of the salon floor.

With so many pop-up salons and beauty parlours crowding the High Street and shopping centres, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd and attract enough clients to stay afloat. Some salon owners resort to ever-more desperate tactics to get new clients through the door, which can often end up costing them more money than they make.
However, there is one very simple way you can boost your salon clientele. You can hold an open day at your salon, inviting potential clients to come and check out the vibe of your salon. It is a low-pressure way of attracting clients who may normally be nervous about booking an appointment at a new salon.
Preparing for the open day
This is your chance to impress, so make sure that you put all your effort into preparing for your open day. You need to think about:
• Salon furniture. Are your salon chairs too tatty or poorly maintained? Do they need replacing? Scuffed, dirty or faulty salon equipment and furniture can give a very poor impression of your salon.
• Cleaning. Show your salon off to its best by giving the whole place a professional clean.
• Marketing your event. Put posters up, affiliate your salon with local brands and businesses, hand out vouchers and promise discounts (make sure you don’t give away too much though)
• Refreshments
• Complimentary beauty treatments or hair styling
