Massage chairs for the salon

There are many different chairs that you can choose to have in your salon but you want to choose a chair that is going to be comfortable and practical. After all your clients are going to be sitting the chair for a long period of time, particularly if they are having their colour done.

If you really want to treat your clients to something special when they come in to have their hair done or to have their nails done, why not invest in some massage chairs for them to sit in?

Massage chairs are extremely relaxing which is just how you want your clients to feel whilst they are in the salon. You want them to de-stress and enjoy the process of getting their hair coloured, cut and styled or having a manicure and pedicure. For most women especially they will have set aside a day for their pampering and they want to be treated like royalty. You can ask any waiting clients to sit in your massage chairs as well if you are running behind so it feels like they haven’t been forgotten about. Massage chairs for a salon are a real luxury so you should make the most of their use.

Salon design inspiration: Voodoo Hair Salon in Northampton

The Voodoo Hair Salon in Northampton boasts an enticing combination of cutting-edge hairdressing and equally high-class interior design.

The owner of the salon, James Smith, undertook renovation work on an existing salon at the Wellingborough Road site in order to open Voodoo. He and business partner Kate Rose decided that the premises was desperately need of a style injection. Smith explains:

“This was a pretty straightforward refurb for me. Everything was already in place, such as the plumbing, so all I needed to do was come in and powder its nose. The whole refurb took just two weeks.”

“I wanted to create another striking salon that got the town talking, and I think I have done that.”

Voodoo offers a feast of inspiration for salon and spa interior design fans, in the form of bespoke and vintage pieces of salon furniture and other standout features.

The salon features a butterfly-decorated wall, a stunning gold reception desk and matching gold walls, along with gold Chesterfield sofas and cow-hide backwash unit seats. Overall, the finished effect at Voodoo is one of glamour and luxury, with a creative splash of quirkiness and originality.

Hot trend: futuristic salon furniture

An increasing number of modern salons are starting to embrace the trend for minimalistic design, particularly in salons and spas catering to the high-end market. This direct, simplistic look – with its sharp, geometric lines and monochromatic colour schemes – is also suited to the business and professional market.

A huge part of minimalist design is its futuristic style, found mainly in salon equipment and furniture. Whilst keeping comfort and ergonomics in mind, salon chairs and backwash units are now being designed in striking geometric shapes. Everything from colour, pattern and material is pared back in an effortlessly chic fashion, leaving the artistically crafted contours of the design to speak for themselves.

What this new trend can do for your salon

The main benefit of kitting out your salon or spa with the very latest pieces of futuristic salon furniture relates to the message it sends to clients. If your salon’s design scheme (encompassing furniture, equipment and décor) is avant-garde, it says that your service, facilities, staff and overall ethos as a business are cutting-edge too. This will set you apart from the competition and enable you to attract your desired clientele.

Competing with other salons on the high street

If you have seen some of the other salons on the high street and you want your salon to have a chance to compete with them, you want to make sure that your services are of the highest standard, the services that you offer are competitively priced and the salon looks as sophisticated as it can be.

When setting up a salon, you will need to factor in the cost of setting up the salon with appropriate salon chairs and barber chairs as well as mirrors and a reception desk. You need to have an area for your clients to wait comfortably before they are called over by the sylist to discuss their hair cut or hair colour. Your salon needs to be a welcoming as possible if you want to attract new clientele and this means having a clean environment that looks as fashionable as the hair cuts that you produce.

By paying attention to the small details around the salon, you should find that your new clients keep coming back to your for their hair cut. It is a worthwhile investment and you will be getting your new hair salon off on the right foot and making yourself some money at the same time.

Salon colour schemes and mood pt.2 – yellow, orange and brown

Unlike shades at the girlier end of the colour spectrum (see pt.1), earth tones such as orange, yellow and brown can create the feeling of natural, rather than artificial, beauty.

These earth colours, although quite rare in most modern salons, are perfect for health and well-being spas where the client wants to feel a connection with nature in a relaxing, peaceful environment.

Colours and their attributes

The following is a quick look at the emotions and impressions commonly associated with earth colours.

Yellows (happiness, cheerfulness, joy) – A vibrant, happy shade, use yellow subtly to avoid an abundance of garish, nearly neon brightness that some clients may find headache-inducing.

Browns (simplicity, wholesomeness, earthiness) – Brown is the ultimate earthy shade, connecting natural materials (i.e. wood floors and marble worktops) with modern salon furniture and equipment.

Orange (energy, enthusiasm, change) – Using shades of orange in your salon is a great way to recharge your client’s batteries, as it is an energising shade. Orange is also very warm and welcoming for clients, ensuring they will return again and again.

The best way to use these earth tones is in subtle, balanced measures, as too much of one colour may overpower the salon and undermine the concept of relaxation and natural beauty you are trying to create.

Comfortable yet practical salon chairs

If you are fashion conscious, you probably always make sure that you go to the best clothes shops and the trendy looking hairdressers to get your hair styled. Most people are led with their eyes when it comes to fashion, clothing and hair. If a salon isn’t looking up to scratch, it is very unlikely that people would want to come in and have their haircut. This is why you need to make sure that your salon is looking its best. This might mean giving the walls a lick of paint but it may also mean that you need to replace certain parts of the furniture in the salon so that it looks smart and professional yet entices people to come for a hair cut.

The chairs that you offer to your clients to sit on, need to be comfortable yet practical. The hairdresser needs to be able to move around the chair freely so that they can see the hair at all angles and position themselves where necessary to make the right cuts. Your client also needs to be comfortable and feel that they are able to relax during their hair cut. You might even want to consider a massage chair for them!

Salon colour schemes and mood pt. 1 – red, pink and purple

Great salon design is not just about how the space looks; it’s how it feels that matters to clients. Colour plays a huge role in this, as it is the particular associations and attributes of different colours that helps to create a mood or atmosphere in your salon.

So, what mood is your current colour scheme creating? More importantly, what can you do to improve it? The following list of colours and their qualities (i.e. the emotional responses people tend to have towards them) should help you plan your salon’s new colour scheme, ending up with a space that looks and feels just as you intended it to.

Colours and their attributes

Reds (power, heat, passion, intensity) – As vibrant and statement-making as reds may be, use the colour sparingly as it can make clients feel upset or antsy, especially if you are running late with your appointments.

Pinks (sweetness, playfulness, delicate femininity) – Used subtly and creatively, pinks can be great for creating the girliest of hair and beauty havens. However, keep the appearance of your salon equipment and furniture simple and professional to avoid making your salon look like the inside of a Barbie playhouse.

Purples (royalty, luxury, magic) – This colour is perfect for fashion-forward clients with a sense of fun and a love of luxury.

See pt.2 for more salon colour schemes and the effects they have on clients.

If you are going to be spending your hard earned cash in the salon, you want to know that the quality of the salon is top of the range and the services that they provide are second to none.

There are a whole host of spas up and down the country that provide both men and women with every beauty treatment you can think of as well as hair cuts and hair colouring.

If you have recently set up your own spa or you are thinking about starting up your own business, you need to think about the quality of the furniture items that you have in the salon and the products and services that you are offering to your clientele. If you have a professional looking salon, which looks good, your clientele will return again and again to use your services and will even pass the message on to their friends and family.
